Whether it's interning in London, studying in Spain or doing research in Germany, most Hobart and William Smith students will have had some kind of international learning experience before they graduate.
With some planning, Art History and Studio Art majors can travel abroad and still graduate on time. While the Center for Global Education offers abroad programs on six continents, faculty from the art department sponsor programs in Galway, Ireland and Rome, Italy.
Galway, a university town with a vibrant artistic and cultural atmosphere, is the administrative capital of County Galway and the largest city in the West of Ireland. This area of the country is noted for its geographic and cultural distinctiveness. HWS has maintained an affiliation with the National University of Ireland, Galway, to provide students with the opportunity to live and study among Irish students at an Irish university. Participants in the program are also encouraged to join one of the many university clubs and organizations in order to directly experience Irish student life and culture. A service-learning project, required of all students and linked to the Director's Seminar, will provide a unique opportunity for all students to gain access to the local community.
The interdisciplinary Rome, Italy program utilizes the entire city as a classroom or studio. While the program is designed to immerse students fully in the experience of being in Rome, several significant excursions will provide students with a wider perspective on the history, culture and daily life of Italy as a whole. For the first two weeks of this program, students are housed in a hotel in central Rome, within close walking distance of many of the major historical sites. The group then moves to furnished flats to provide an opportunity to practice Italian language skills and experience Roman daily life. Students are affiliated with the Scuola Leonardo da Vinci (SLdV), one of the leading language and culture schools in Italy.
At HWS, students have the freedom to study at any of our Global Education destinations.
The featured abroad programs are recommended by the Art department based on content of the curricula.
