Students who already receive financial aid and who intend to participate in a Global Education program sponsored by Hobart and William Smith Colleges will continue to receive financial aid (excluding work study) for the time they are off-campus. Any student, even those not currently receiving financial aid, can apply for aid based on economic eligibility.
Financial aid applications will be available in early January for the following academic year. Students desiring an early evaluation should have the application completed and mailed to the processing center by the deadline determined by the Financial Aid Office. A photocopy of the application must be sent directly to the Financial Aid Office on campus at the same time.
All off campus programs sponsored by the Colleges require a non-refundable deposit of $350.00. If this payment presents a significant and demonstrable burden, an applicant should submit a deposit waiver request form, available from the Business Office, which would allow payment of a reduced deposit. The Financial Aid Office should be alerted at the time the application for the program is submitted.
Students who apply for and are granted permission to participate in a non-HWS program will not receive institutional aid from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Students should also check into how their other financial aid may be affected by participation in an off campus study program sponsored by another institution. Finally, students who know that they will be off-campus during the application period for financial aid for the following year must make arrangements to complete all application materials in advance or from off-campus. Late applicants will be penalized.
Students with questions about financial aid matters should seek the advice of the financial aid officers on campus well in advance of submitting their applications for participation.
The following are descriptions and links to scholarship opportunities to support study abroad either during your undergraduate education, or for post-graduate travel and study.
UNDERGRADUATE FINANCING
General
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship provides qualified students up to $5,000 for a semester or academic year study abroad program. (Open only to Federal Pell Grant recipients - check with the financial aid office if you're not sure if you are a recipient of the Pell Grant). You should begin the process in late August for spring programs and in mid-February for fall programs.
The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) offers scholarships valued at up to $5,000 per semester to eight students from U.S. institutions. FEA's scholarships were established to recognize American students who seek to participate in study abroad programs known for their academic rigor, language study, service learning component and/or immersion elements, especially those who represent groups that are traditionally underrepresented in study abroad and/or those who choose non-traditional locations. The Huawei scholarship, for example, is awarded to a committed student seeking to study in China specifically. The application deadline is in November for study in the following academic year.
The International Business Council of Rochester, NY (IBC) will award a $1,500 scholarship to a student accepted to a study abroad program by a college in the greater Rochester area. All students accepted to a study abroad program at HWS who are U.S. citizens, have a 3.0 cumulative gpa or higher and can demonstrate financial need are eligible to apply. To apply for this award, please contact Amy Teel at the Center for Global Education.
Mabel Farnum and CGE Travel Grants provide small sums towards student airfare for abroad programs. All students accepted to HWS programs will be sent information and an application form by email from the CGE in the semester before they leave for their program. Note that Mabel Farnum grants are for William Smith students only.
National Security Education Program (NSEP) provides undergraduates committed to learning "critical" languages (see website for details) with resources they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to US security. Open to college students for study in less-commonly studied areas. There is a service requirement for recipients. The deadline is normally in early February, so only those going on fall programs will be able to apply.
Student International Initiatives Fund grants (or SIIF grants), provide students with funds (budget permitting) to undertake a project during their program that helps them explore a topic of interest while digging deeper into the culture they are exploring abroad. Contact Doug Reilly for more information.
