Following tradition, President Mark D. Gearan and Mary Herlihy Gearan welcomed nearly 700 new first-year and transfer students to the Hobart and William Smith community on August 26. Our Orientation team, led by students Brian Horn ’12 and Caroline Dosky ’12, has done a great job helping new students acclimate to campus (see the flash mob welcome for our new students). On Monday, August 29, classes began and Convocation speaker Darell Hammond – the CEO of KaBoom! – engaged the campus community in a discussion about the power of an idea, a theme that will continue to resonate throughout the year.
Earlier in August, Kerry Cassell P’07, P’10, P’12, director of Parent Relations whom many of you know, left the Colleges for new challenges in Arizona. The HWS community will miss her style, grace and the extraordinary level of attention she dedicated to HWS families. I am in the process of reorganizing some staff responsibilities, and will announce Kerry’s replacement shortly. Until our new organization is set, our families will be well supported by Amanda Hoban in the Office of Parent Relations, and my door is always open, as well.
This fall will be an exciting time on the HWS campus, and we encourage our parents to connect with the Colleges as the year unfolds – especially during Homecoming and Family Weekend October 21-23. A formal invitation will be mailed shortly, but you can take a sneak peek at the planned activities on our website.
Don’t hesitate to be in touch with us if we can be of assistance in any way.
Best wishes,
Bob O’Connor
Vice President for Institutional Advancement
