The William Smith Centennial is a call to action for William Smith women to harness their combined talents and take a leadership role in the future of Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Our theme – Leading Women – points to both the way in which William Smith College guides women in their formative years and how these women, armed with a background of scholarship, experience and success, go on to become leaders.
The Centennial observance is happening concurrent with the public phase of the Campaign for the Colleges. As such, William Smith College intends to attract $15 million to the campaign; $8 million of which will establish the new Center for Leadership. It is our intention to use these funds to more deliberately guide students in understanding the concept of leadership, to create opportunities for them to study with experienced and successful women leaders, and to provide them with empirical leadership-building opportunities.
The William Smith Centennial Center for Leadership will include:
$3.5 million
To fund both a rotating Leader in Residence and a Director of the Centennial Leadership Program. The Leader in Residence – ideally for a woman of prominence – will be invited to interact with students both in and out of the classroom, to promote critical thinking, ethical judgment and communication skills in whatever format is most appropriate given her expertise. The Center Director will be the nucleus of leadership development at Hobart and William Smith and will engage students with co-curricular programming that includes classes on debate, effective communications, diversity and other essential leadership skills.
$1.8 million
To fund research and curricular enhancement opportunities for our students, especially between and during the sophomore and junior years. Such research directly influences both choice of career and interest in pursuing graduate studies. Creation of this fund would help meet two objectives:
- to position our students to be more competitive for national fellowships, graduate school admissions and professional opportunities, and
- to promote, recognize and retain high-achieving students.
$200,000
To provide recognition of and support for our graduates’ research, artistic, scholarly, career or creative projects. This endowment will show the institution’s commitment to the ongoing education and development of leadership for our alumnae. Recipients will return to campus to share their experiences with our current students.
$1.5 million
To renovate 603 South Main Street, into a multi-use facility to be used for programs; office space for the Centennial Chair and administrative support; Centennial operations; archival displays of William Smith history; and the work of the Leadership Chair. In addition, the Center will provide seminar classrooms to enhance existing instructional space.
$1 million
To endow scholarships for students with proven leadership skills.
