I work as a student researcher in the Psychology Department and one summer I had the opportunity to stay on campus and worked one-on-one with a professor. I'm also a team leader for Jumpstart, a program that partners college students with local children in an effort to develop literacy, language and social skills. As a leader, I guide eight other HWS students who work with at risk four year olds. I absolutely love it! I've learned so much and it's been an incredibly rewarding experience.
Last fall I began working with Professor Julie Kingery and the Geneva Head Start program gathering information about the home literacy environment and socio-economic status of students starting kindergarten. I was able to turn my research into an honors project about kindergarten literacy and I collected additional information regarding the children's friendships, anxieties and home literacy environment.
Instead of going abroad, I chose to complete an internship during the fall of my junior year. I had the opportunity to intern with a school psychologist in an elementary school near Rochester, which allowed me to shadow a professional in the field and get involved in the culture of the school by working with children, families, principals and teachers.
After graduation, I will be entering a Ph.D. program for school psychology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. I'm so excited about the opportunity to combine my major and minors into a career that I am passionate about and I owe it all to HWS! I've had the best experience with professors here. They truly care and their guidance has influenced the path that I've chosen.
