RENEWAL APPLICATION PROCESS

Hobart and William Smith Colleges is committed to working with our students and families to ensure they are able to reach their educational goals.  Renewal of financial aid is an important step in this process.

Financial aid awards for non-international students are for one year only. In order to renew your financial aid, all required forms must be in the Office of Financial Aid Services and Student Employment by April 15 for priority packaging.

If your financial picture changes significantly during this time, HWS will review your award and make appropriate changes.

Renewal application information will be sent to students via e-mail prior to the December break.

All students applying to renew their financial aid must submit the following:

Returning Student Financial Aid Application
The Returning Student Financial Aid Application (PDF) is required of all returning financial aid recipients. Students studying abroad for the spring semester should complete the application prior to leaving as it must have a student and parent signature.  The deadline to submit to the Office of Financial Aid Services and Student Employment is April 15.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Renewal FAFSA
The FAFSA is required for renewal of HWS Grants, federal grants and loans and New York State financial assistance. The Student Aid Report generated as a result of filing  the FAFSA must be received electronically in the Financial Aid Office by April 15. The  HWS code for FAFSA is 002731.

Students and parents completing the Renewal FAFSA electronically will use their PIN   issued previously by the federal processor.  If the PIN has been misplaced or lost, or if you have never filed electronically, a new PIN may be requested at www.PIN.ed.gov.  The FAFSA is filed electronically at www.fafsa.gov.

Should additional documents be required to determine your eligibility for financial aid, you will be notified directly.

Students may also have to submit the following, where appropriate:

New York State (NYS) TAP Application
NYS residents with a New York State net taxable family income of $80,000 or less may qualify for a TAP grant ranging from $500-$5,000 and are encouraged to apply.  Students eligible for the NYS Academic Excellence Scholarship and/or NY Lottery must also complete the NYS TAP application even if they are not financially eligible for the NYS TAP award.

By filing the FAFSA on the web, you will be prompted to file your TAP Application online. Please do so to speed the entire application process.  If you do not file the FAFSA electronically or complete the TAP application online you must request a paper TAP application from the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (NYSHESC).

An estimate of your TAP eligibility will be included in the offer of financial assistance from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. NYSHESC will email your award notification to the email address provided or to the home address on your application.  The Colleges will also receive notification of your official award as determined by HESC.

First-time upper-class financial aid applicants must also complete the following:

College Board CSS Financial Aid Profile Form.
Hobart and William Smith's college code is 2294.
The CSS Profile application is required in order to receive grant funding from The Colleges.

Income and Tax documents
First time applicants are required to submit signed tax returns for the parent and student, schedules A, C and E if applicable and parent and student W-2s. Financial aid awards for first time applicants will not be determined until all documents are received and reviewed.
