POSITION DESCRIPTION

Assistant Professor - Temporary (One-Year)
Department of Art and Architecture

The Department of Art and Architecture at Hobart William Smith Colleges invites applications for a full time, one year position at the Assistant Professor level for the academic year 2012-13 with the possibility of conversion to tenure track during the 2012-13 academic year.

The Department offers a non-professional liberal arts major in architectural studies with curricular emphasis on conceptual thinking through making and regard for the design process as a method of inquiry grounded in tectonic and material-driven creative practices. The only area of our curriculum that is based in digital representation and design is within preparation for a Portfolio course, utilizing the Adobe suite. Advanced studios, Honors Projects, and Independent Studies in the architectural studies program offer students opportunities to explore specific fields of design including small structure design, site design, or product design.

This faculty member will teach 6 courses in the areas of introductory two- and three-dimensional design, portfolio design, advanced design, and/or history/theory reflective of the candidate's specific training. The ideal candidate will have a broad sensibility toward design as a field of interdisciplinary inquiry and experience teaching introductory design to students new to design studio and the design process. For more information about the program, see http://www.hws.edu/academics/architecture/

Applicants must have a Masters (M.Arch., M.F.A., M.L.A., M.A., or other) degree in a design or applied arts field.
